Background:
HB 21 is the fastest on ramp to building thousands of affordable new housing units across Montana.
HB 21 is uniquely tailored to use a small amount of tax credits to leverage large amounts of private capital for housing. That is what is needed!
Lawmakers have a surplus in their balances in this biennium, so there is no good excuse not to use it to invest in desperately needed affordable housing for Montanans, thereby lowering cost of living for folks on limited and fixed incomes.
Medicaid Bill (HB 230) is Essential for a healthy working Montana.
The Health and Human Services Committee will hold a hearing on House Bill 230 on Wednesday, January 22, and we need your voice to ensure this critical bill advances.
HB 230 sponsored by Representative Caferro (D, Helena), is a comprehensive bill to improve Medicaid access and services in Montana. It proposes:
Eliminating work requirements and premiums for Medicaid participants, reducing barriers to essential healthcare.
Implementing 12-month continuous eligibility for Medicaid, ensuring uninterrupted coverage for families.
Enhancing customer service, including online and mobile-friendly applications and communications.
Creating a Medicaid Client Advisory Board to amplify the voices of those directly impacted.
Reopening 10 local offices of public assistance by June 2026 to better serve our communities.
Additionally, the bill provides a $3 million annual appropriation to fund these improvements.

Support Community-Based Services for Aging Montanans in SB 72
A recent survey found that over 90% of Montanans want to stay in their own home or community as they grow older. While that is not always possible depending on care needs, a person can often stay in their own home with a little help in areas like nutrition, personal care, home improvements to enhance accessibility, medication management, or personal emergency response systems.
SB 72, “Provide Presumptive Eligibility for Medicaid Coverage of Home and Community Based Services,” sponsored by Sen. Mike Yakawich (Billings), would allow persons who would otherwise qualify to be in nursing homes, to instead receive timely assistance that would help them maintain independence in their own home.
SB 72 will save significant dollars as home care services are much less expensive than nursing home care!
The bill authorizes qualified, trained professionals to quickly assess whether an individual who is needing assistance is qualified to receive medicaid.
Without SB 72, there can be months-long delays in that determination process.
Long delays in needed assistance can result in rapid decline for the challenged individual, and result in nursing home placements.
Research on a similar Ohio initiative showed that nearly 80% of participants were still living at home after 6 months.
On Wednesday numerous organizations joined with Big Sky 55+ to support SB 72 in its first hearing in the Senate Public Health Committee. The committee members now need to hear from YOU!
